Press Release: Diva Invitational

March 9, 2007

The 2007 “Just Us Girls Fashion CafĂ©” Diva Invitational Squash Tournament is open to women and girls only. It will be a weekend not only of squash playing but of other things “girly” – a “pj party”-themed social, spa treatments, an exclusive night of shopping at Just Us Girls Fashion CafĂ©, chocolate and chick flicks.

“Squash has really grown as a sport for women in PEI in the past 10 years and we’d like to see it grow even more”, says Kelly MacWilliams, one of the tournament organizers. “Some of the reasons I started playing are that it’s a huge calorie burner, and works pretty much every muscle you have….and it’s a really social sport, which I like.”

Tournament organizers have added new divisions which they hope will help women who have just started playing to feel more comfortable with the idea of entering a tournament. The “newbie” division is for women who have never entered a tournament before and the junior girls is for girls under 12. As well, this tournament will mark the first time a Squash PEI tournament will have a women’s Veterans division for women over 45.

“The organizers worked to find some sponsors that fit with the theme of attracting women and girls to the sport of squash and we were really pleased that Just Us Girls agreed to be involved as the title sponsor. Another of our sponsors, The Great George, has recently announced ‘The Charlotte Club’, a women-only floor with upgraded amenities like Aveda products and lovely robes,” says Cynthia Dunsford of Squash PEI. “All of our sponsors, including Cox & Palmer, the Queen Street Commons, Avon and UPEI, are helping Squash PEI put together a really fun tournament package.”

To assist in the goal of attracting new women to the sport, a free clinic for beginning women will be held on March 19 from 5:30 – 7:00 at UPEI to teach the basics of the game.

The tournament will be held at UPEI from March 30 to April 1. Registrations will be taken on-line at www.squashpei.org or by calling (902) 368-8612 by March 21.
