Did You Know? #2 (by DWL)

A measure of how bouncy a ball is, is the ratio (R) of the maximum height to which  a ball bounces to that from which it is initially dropped. According to the specifications for a “double yellow” squash ball, R=0.12 @ 23 degrees C (cold ball, i.e. room temperature), and 0.26-0.33 @ 45 degrees C (hot ball), when dropped from an initial height of 100 inches (254 cm). Basically, what this means is that a cold ball loses all but 12% of its kinetic energy (energy of motion) when it strikes the floor (this is also a good approximation as to how much energy is lost when the ball strikes a wall) . No wonder it is generally best to hit the ball before it strikes the back wall….the loss of kinetic energy means the ball will not bounce out very far!

The lost kinetic energy is mostly due to a production of thermal energy (heat) which warms up the ball (and the contacted floor, wall or racket). As the ball warms up, the rubber material of the ball becomes more “pliable”. The more pliable the ball becomes, the less kinetic energy it loses while being squished (i.e. deformation while striking a wall, floor, etc.). This is why R increases with temperature!

A “blue dot” ball, which is recommended for beginner players, is designed to be more bouncy(R=0.17 for a cold ball, and R=0.38 for a hot ball). This translates into a significantly higher bounce for easier play.

A tennis ball by comparison is much more bouncy. Dropped from a height of 100 inches, a tennis ball will bounce to a height of 53-58 inches (i.e. R=0.53-0.58). I can recall (to my embarassment) an incident when I first started playing squash. At the time, I was also playing tennis. So, one day, after playing squash, I went out onto a tennis court. I leaned over to bounce the tennis ball in preparation to serve. Not being used to the extra bounciness of the tennis ball, I threw down the ball with such force that it bounced up and hit me in the head!

It should be noted that, regardless of the ball temperature, the faster the ball is traveling when it strikes the floor, wall etc., the more it squishes, and hence the larger the fraction of kinetic energy lost (e.g. if a cold double yellow ball is dropped from 200 inches, the resulting measured R will be smaller than 0.12)

The fact that a pre-match warm up involves warming up the ball as well as the players is one of the unique features of squash as a racket sport.

It seems your looking very deeply for the answers to get out of B Derek. I don’t think however that the answer lies in the kinetic energy of the ball. I believe you need to do a google search for what is called “bridesmaid syndrome”. As in “always the bridesmaid and never the bride”. Keep your chin up Derek, your not alone. Scott Lacey fell to this syndrome once but managed to beat it after Lisa Devine moved on.

    Geeze…thanks Scotty……..Bridesmaid Syndrome……well….at least the acronym is correct….BS!

I did take your advice though…….I googled and did come up with this interesting tidbit….

This idiomatic usage of the word bridesmaid most probably began in 1917 when Fred W Leigh and Charles Collins compose “Always a Bridesmaid”:

‘Why am I always a bridesmaid,
    Never the blushing bride?
    Ding! Dong! Wedding bells
    Always ring for other gals.
    But one fine day –
Please let it be soon –
I shall wake up in the morning
    On my own honeymoon.’

Not sure this is of any help to me though….

    Derek,
Not sure if ‘honeymoon’ will be appropriate when you finally walk up the altar to “A”; more like waking up in prison and being the cutest guy there (who coincidentally owns his own skirt!!)……good luck!

  • 4. Scotty G  |  February 21, 2007 at 9:59 am

honeymoon eh? So many things to say but this is a censored blog. Not sure if it will be the sweet, elegant, intiation that may be associated with a honeymoon when you get to A but rumour has it that your already running scared and are bypassing A and going straight to Legends. Don’t get me wrong, your consistant one leg up in B is legendary but in the words of Peter T Webb, “You’ve got some comeuppings to get”.

The overwelming concern for my squash promotion is indeed much appreciated! Let me take this opportunity to clarify the “rumour” of my running scared and bypassing MA and going straight to Legends. I would indeed consider it an honour to play competitive squash against the likes of Gordie, Kenny, Danny, Cam, Chris, Stevie, and the gang.

On the other hand, how could I possibly deny Scotty the opportunity to finally defeat me in competition……after all this is clearly a very important “life experience” and “growth” event for him…OK Scotty…..if I make it to A, I WILL play in A……and you WILL get your opportunity……BUT……..there is a catch…..I will only play you IF you wear a skirt!!!! Are you man enough to accept my terms?…..I’m thinking not……

  • 6. Scotty G  |  February 21, 2007 at 12:10 pm

Well given the old gray mare’s track record, I think it would be quite safe of me to accept the challenge but let’s face it, men in skirts don’t work. It’s been done and it just aint pretty. We need to move on to newer, better ideas. For example, I once played in a snowsuit so that nobody would know who I was or we make a wager…with some embarrassing consequences but why should I show my world off in a skirt for something you’ve done?

  • 7. Derek Lawther  |  February 21, 2007 at 1:49 pm

    hummm…..OK…I am open to suggestions……

  • 8. Puzzled  |  February 21, 2007 at 2:16 pm

Why don’t you just wear a toupee if you get to play Derek, there Scott boy, Let’s face it. It won’t hurt you to start wearing one anyway, and Mikey B as well. As for myself I got a tasteful hairstyling the other day and it still looks pretty damn good.

I have been gathering evidence and have noted that we have a case of identity fraud on this blog. Now ordinarilly I wouldn’t care but this has happened on more than one occasion and Puzzled is soon going to be suffering from amnesia after he suffers a major whooping, yet again. Now it may seem odd for a special golden boy to keep such a low profile by stealing other names and slanderizing PEI’s finest but this is what brings me to his motive…jealousy. He can’t grind it with the best of them on the squash court and he can’t grind it with the worst of them on the dance floor so he tries punching below the belt on the fellows that hold him back and steel the spotlight. Now I can’t deny that Scott and Mike have hair loss issues but it’s pathetic how Fabio jumps on the bandwagon and chops his hair off to be a part of the squad.

What kind of prizes are up for grabs at this Cash Classic?

  • 11. Hot for Fabio  |  February 22, 2007 at 3:31 pm

Hey Fabio great to hear you got a tasteful hairstyle cause those long golden locks were just soooo HOTT!!!! It took everything not to jump you. I just picture myself running my fingers through your long blond hair. I have to go have a cold shower now. See you soon.

Thanks HFF, and I cut my long, lustrous hair strictly for that reason. I know there’s going to be a lot of misery from certain fans but believe me, it’s for your own good.

Well now…amazing to think this conversation evolved from a post on the physics of bouncy balls!………hummm…..I guess I shouldn’t be surprised…….I have often experienced the same in social settings……goes something like this…….

    (stranger) So….what do you do?
    (me) Oh…..I am a physicist……
(stranger) Wow….fantastic!……I always wanted to meet a physicist…….I think they are so fascinating!…….do you mind telling me all about what you do?……gee….I see you need a refill on your drink….let me get that for you….I’ll hurry right back…

    Oh…..oops…..sorry about that………actually….it goes more like this…….

    (stranger) So….what do you do?
    (me) Oh…..I am a physicist……
(stranger) Wow….hummm…..gee….pardon me…..I need to refill my drink….

Just kidding guys…..keep the conversations going……wherever they may lead to……..

Yes it certainly is for your own good. Why I often found myself wondering what is Peter covering up with the long hair and now I know. His hair dresser (who would like to remain anonymous) approached me the other day about a recent customer of theirs. During the “haircut”, numerous varmints were dashing from the head of hair and looking for new cover. It seems that with Peter’s long awaited hair cut, some small rodents had established a winter dwelling and now he has sent them back to the cold without defense from the remainder of the cold winter. This haircut has also inspired others to follow suit. Shortly thereafter, it was noted that Scotty H was oberserved to be barefaced without his goatee.

Well that’s a half truth, actually most of the hair is fetching a handsome price on Ebay. I feel like one the Beatles.

  • 16. Journalist  |  February 27, 2007 at 3:52 pm

This just in. Mikey B overbids Scotty G and is the new owner of a Peter T Webb Authentic Hairpiece. He has asked that the selling price be confidential as it is worth more to him than the financial burden accompanied with his purchase.

Congratulations Mike, I hope you enjoy my hair as much as I did
