It’s a wrap!

Congratulations to all of the participants of the 2006 UPEI Open. It was a great turn out with over 75 registrants signed up in 10 draw categories. The Masters and Junior divisions were well stocked with some old and new faces. Chris Mills and Stevie Arsenault graced us with their presence and put on a good show in the Masters while the Jinks clan (Ryann and Connor) took home 2 of the 3 prizes in the Junior division. (now if we can only teach them to pick up after themselves).

We had one out-of-towner from Moncton, Rodney Beers, who found out he is related (in some Island-ish convoluted way) to Pam Williams, of Charlie and Evelyn fame. Looks like he’s got a place to stay now!

It’s been a while since we’ve had a Tracy – Mary final in Women’s A, as well Scott and Mike in Men’s A. What better example for the young players of tomorrow than to watch our best in action. Gives them something to reach for and someone to look up to…

Hope y’all like your towels too!! Oh, and check out the new photos to the right and the video below.

What It Takes To Be NUMBER ONE by Vince Lombardi

Submitted by a Squash PEI member:

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all the time thing. You don’t win once in a while; you don’t do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that’s first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don’t ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it’s for losers. It is, and always has been, an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win.

Every time a player goes to ply his trade he’s got to play from the ground up – from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That’s OK. You’ve got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you’ve got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you’re lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he’s never going to come off the field second.

It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That’s why they are there – to compete. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules, but to win.

That any man’s finest hour – his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear – is the moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle – victorious”.

Game on!

The UPEI Open is just around the corner, so all those first-time registrants for this squash season better dust of the shoes and bring some attitude…cuz you’re going to need it!!

With over 75 participants in the draw the tournament promises to feature some pretty sweet matches. Check out the schedules on the walls of UPEI and at The Spa. Someday we’ll have tournament schedules on line.

BTW – The Social is at The Spa on Saturday night after the 7:20 matches. Regarding the social…just a thought…try and control the ‘pigs at a trough’ tendencies we lean toward when the food is brought out. Seriously, it’s gross and rude. And last time there were several people who missed out on the snacks. Perhaps we will suggest that some of the juniors pass the food around instead of the mass dive technique….anyways, just a thought.

See you all there!!

BRING IT!

Squash Haikus by Marc Beland

Simple, elegant
An economy of words
Just like a squash match!

—————————-

Ready the racquet
All shots up and down the wall
Tactics tell: take the ‘T’!

Work hard in the court
One must never hope for good luck
No, you rely on it!!

I drop and you lob
You lose and must change your game
You drop and I lob

Straight return of serve
Keep away from the angles
Get back to the ‘T’!

Once you make the serve
The place to be is the ‘T’
Move it, Move it! Move!!

Time to get fancy?
Back-hand volley cross-court nick
No other shot works

Please feel free to submit your own squash haiku(s)…
(A Haiku poem is three lines long. The first line is five syllables, the second, seven; the third, five.)
