Did you know? #1

Gary Sheehan, Birth of the Atomic Age, 1957
This is a painting depicting the first nuclear reactor, which went critical on December 2, 1942. It was built from uranium pellets embedded in graphite blocks. It was a prototype for later reactors constructed for the purpose of manufacturing weapons-grade plutonium. Do the walls look familiar? In fact, the reactor site was an improvised laboratory on a squash court located under the stands of Stagg Field on the campus of the University of Chicago!
